OnePlus’ upcoming smartphone called the OnePlus Nord has been the hot topic of conversation in the tech world for a while. There was speculation of an affordable OnePlus device for a long time after the high priced OnePlus 8-series. Now the company has officially confirmed the launch date of the device for 21 July via a YouTube video on the company’s official channel. Apart from this several other leaks have also painted a near-complete picture of what to expect from the device. So here is a roundup of all we know so far of the upcoming OnePlus Nord.
OnePlus Nord 5G: AR Launch event and availability
The OnePlus Nord 5G will be the first phone that will be revealed via an AR launch event. To experience the unveiling you will need to download the Nord Launch App on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. There will also be physical invites to the event that will have a QR code that can be scanned to gain access to the event.
As for availability, the OnePlus Nord 5G is said to be available in both Europe and India at launch. For the time being, the device is not being launched in the US but the company has said that it should be happening soon.
OnePlus Nord 5G: Expected Design
On its landing page for the OnePlus Nord on Amazon, the company has uploaded a shaky image of the phone being slipped into a jeans pocket. From this photo, we can make out a couple of design elements on the device’s back. The first thing we notice is the camera array which is placed vertically like the OnePlus 8-series but on the top right of the device instead of the center. While in the photo we cannot clearly make out the number of cameras, from earlier leaks we can say that it is most likely a quad-camera setup. The OnePlus logo is present on the bottom while the alert switch slider is also visible in the photo.
Display-wise the Nord 5G is likely going to have a 6.55-inch Full HD+ display AMOLED panel with a dual punch-hole cutout for the selfie shooters. The screen refresh rate will be 90Hz and the display will not curve on the sides like both the OnePlus 8-series phones. The bottom of the phone will have a speaker grille and a type-C port but sadly no headphone jack.
OnePlus Nord 5G: Expected specs
The company has confirmed that the OnePlus Nord 5G will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC although previous rumours were pointing towards the MediaTek Dimensity 1000. This would make the Nord 5G as the first phone in India launched with 765H chipset. Other leaks have suggested that the Nord 5G will have up to 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage although that can be extended to 8GB RAM with 256GB of storage. The device will be 5G-enabled thanks to the integrated modem on the 765G SoC although India’s 5G infrastructure is currently non-existent.
On the camera front, the Nord 5G will have a 48MP primary sensor which will be supported by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, we are likely to see a 32MP primary camera supported by an 8MP ultra-wide lens. The entire setup is powered by a 4,300mAh and 30W Warp Charge support wherein the latter was found on the OnePlus 8-series. For authentication purposes, the phone will have an in-display fingerprint sensor.
OnePlus Nord 5G: Pricing
While there have been many stabs at speculating the price of the device, there has been no concrete evidence of the exact value for the Nord 5G. CEO Pete Lau had confirmed earlier that the device would be priced starting at €500 in Europe which is about Rs 42,000. However, as we have seen with the OnePlus 8-series, in India OnePlus launches smartphones at a significantly lower price. We should be looking at a starting price of somewhere around Rs 25,000 for the device to be competitive enough.
